Add modifiers (add-ons) to an item

Let customers customise an item with add-ons and choices — set them as required or optional, single or multiple, and reuse them across items.

Modifiers are how a customer customises a dish: “Add bacon”, “Choose your sauce”, “Extra shot”. They matter for two reasons. They let the customer order the dish the way they actually want it, and they let you charge properly for the extras instead of losing them. You add them from within the item they belong to.

Attach modifiers to an item

1. Open the item by going to Menu → Items and clicking the item, then find the Modifiers section.
2. Choose one of the two ways of adding one:
   • Select existing modifiers lets you pick a modifier you have already built from the dropdown. Each one shows how many options it contains, so you can tell similar ones apart.
   • Create new modifiers opens the New modifier dialog. What you build there is added to this item and also saved on its own, so you can reuse it on other dishes later. Click Create & add when it is ready.
3. Click Save Changes on the item.

Set the rules for a modifier

Each modifier you attach appears as a card, and opening it lets you decide exactly how the choice behaves:

• Name and the list of Options. For each option you can set a price, mark one as the default so it is pre-selected, or switch an option Off when you have run out of it.
• Required decides whether the customer has to make a choice before they can add the dish to their basket. Turn it on for something the kitchen genuinely needs to know, such as how a steak is cooked. When it is on, you also choose a Selection type:
  • Exactly means they must pick a precise number, for example exactly one sauce.
  • Range lets you set a Min and a Max, for example at least one and no more than three toppings.
  • Leaving Required switched off makes the whole modifier optional, so the customer can pick as many or as few as they like, including none.
• Let customers pick more than one of the same option allows a customer to order, say, three portions of extra hummus on one dish. If you allow it, you can also set a Max per item so that nobody orders twenty.

Reuse a set of modifiers: Modifier Groups

When you find yourself attaching the same handful of modifiers to a lot of dishes, bundle them into a Modifier Group instead:

1. In Menu, click Create → New Modifier Group.
2. Give it a Group Name, such as Pizza extras, add a description if it helps somebody else understand what it is for, and add the modifiers that belong in it.
3. Attaching that group to an item then adds every modifier inside it in one go.

So there are two ways of working, and both are valid: attach modifiers one at a time when a dish needs something unusual, and use a group as a shortcut when several dishes need the same set. Your groups live on the Groups tab of the Menu Manager.
