Connect a Sunmi printer over the cloud

Set up a Sunmi NT311 (or any cloud-capable Sunmi printer) so it receives orders over the internet.

Cloud printing is the easiest kind of printing to live with day to day. The printer has its own internet connection and collects its receipts by itself, which means no tablet has to be awake and nobody has to remember to leave an app open. It works just as happily with the printer in the kitchen and the till out at the front.

Before you start

  1. Power the printer up and load a roll of paper.
  2. Connect it to the internet by following the instructions that came with it, which will be either Wi-Fi or a network cable depending on the model.
  3. Find its serial number. On a Sunmi NT311 it is printed on a label on the underside of the printer, usually marked SN.

Take care to copy the serial number rather than guessing at it, and make sure you have not picked up the model number by mistake. That serial is the only thing that tells our system which physical printer, out of every Sunmi printer in the world, belongs to you.

Add it in Dinerly

  1. Go to Settings → your location → Printers.
  2. Click Add Printer.
  3. For Printer Name, use where the printer actually stands, such as Kitchen, Bar or Pass.
  4. For Connection, choose Sunmi Cloud.
  5. For Sunmi serial (SN), type the serial number exactly as it is printed on the label.
  6. Set how many Receipts with numbers and Receipts without numbers this printer should produce for each order.
  7. Save.

Test it

Click Test print next to the printer, and a test receipt should appear within a few seconds.

If nothing comes out, work through these in order:

  • Check the paper roll is the right way round. Thermal paper only prints on one side, so a roll loaded upside down produces a perfectly blank receipt and looks exactly like a printer that is not working.
  • Check the printer’s own network light. If the printer is not on the internet, Dinerly has no way of reaching it at all.
  • Read the serial number back character by character. One wrong digit means the receipt is being sent to a printer that is not yours, or to nothing at all.

Good to know

Cloud printing depends on your internet connection, so if your broadband goes down, your cloud printers stop with it. That is precisely why a lot of busy kitchens also keep one LAN or Bluetooth printer, which carries on working locally while the internet is out.

It is also normal for the first receipt after a quiet spell to take a second or two longer than usual, because the printer has to wake up and reconnect before it can print. Nothing is wrong when that happens.
