Printing & printers

Print from the tablet you're using

Turn a tablet into the device that prints your Bluetooth and network receipts — and use printers already attached to it.

Cloud printers fetch their own receipts over the internet, so they look after themselves. Bluetooth and LAN printers cannot do that, because they have no connection to us — something inside your restaurant has to send the receipt to them, and that something is one of your tablets.

Choose the tablet that prints

On the tablet you want to do the printing:

  1. Go to Settings → your location → Printers.
  2. Find the Print Agent section.
  3. Switch on This device prints receipts.

While that setting is on, this tablet picks up receipts as they are queued and sends them to your Bluetooth and LAN printers. If it is switched off, or the tablet is asleep or out of Bluetooth range, receipts fall back to cloud printing for any printer that has a Sunmi serial number saved against it, and any printer without one will simply not print.

Choose a tablet that stays in one place and stays plugged in. The one mounted at the pass is usually the right answer. A tablet that somebody carries around the floor is the wrong one, because the moment it leaves Bluetooth range, or its battery dies, your printing stops and nobody realises until the kitchen asks where the tickets have gone.

Using a printer already attached to the tablet

If you are on a Sunmi device with a printer built into it, or with a printer already set up in the tablet’s own settings, you do not need Bluetooth details or an IP address at all:

  1. Click Add Printer and set Connection to Connected to this device.
  2. Pick the printer from Choose a printer connected to this tablet….
  3. The Printer ID fills itself in, so leave it exactly as it is. That ID is also what allows receipts to fall back to cloud printing if this tablet is switched off, so changing it will cost you that safety net.
  4. Save and run a Test print.

If the list says No printers connected, the tablet itself does not know about the printer yet. Add it in the tablet’s own Settings → Printer first and then come back, because Dinerly can only show you what the tablet already has.

Everyday habits that prevent problems

  • Leave the printing tablet on charge. A tablet with a flat battery means a kitchen with no tickets, and it always happens at the busiest moment.
  • Do not sign that tablet out at the end of the night if you take online orders in the morning, because a signed-out tablet cannot print the breakfast orders.
  • If you replace the tablet, remember to switch the setting on for the new one. Otherwise everything quietly falls back to cloud printing, and any printer without a serial number stops working without a single error message to warn you.

Only one tablet should be the printing device. If two tablets are both set to print to the same Bluetooth printer they will compete for it, and the result is tickets that print twice, print late, or do not print at all.
